About Halfmoon Bay/xwilkway

Halfmoon Bay is one of 5 electoral areas on the Sunshine Coast, and in Regional District speak is referred to as ‘Area B’. As you can see on the map, Area B is much bigger than you may think! For more info and stats on Halfmoon Bay, visit Area B’s page on the SCRD website here.

About Your Local Government

Halfmoon Bay is not incorporated (not a municipality)—it is what is called an ‘electoral area’. As such, it is not governed by a mayor and council, but rather has representation on the board of the Sunshine Coast Regional District (SCRD).

The SCRD’s main roles are to:

  1. Provide a ‘vehicle’ for advancing the interests of the region as a whole.

  2. Provide governance for the rural areas.

  3. Provide services for some or all areas. For a full list of SCRD services, visit this page.

The SCRD is governed by the Local Government Act and Community Charter and is run by a Board of Directors (9 directors).

How can I stay in the loop?

Want to know what’s happening at the SCRD?

Start here. I’ll be posting blog updates regularly, typically on the Friday following meetings. You can also sign up to receive my newsletter here.

The SCRD website is chock-full of information, and the Coast Reporter is a great resource to find information on decisions taken by the board, projects underway and upcoming meetings.

How Can I Participate?

You can attend board and committee meetings, which are open to the public. Meetings take place in the board room at 1975 Field Rd on Thursdays; you can always watch them live on Zoom or watch them later on YouTube. If participating in person or live on Zoom, you can ask the board a question at the end of the open portion of the meeting at the call of the Chair.

Agendas are typically published the Friday preceding the meeting. I encourage you to scan the agenda cover pages, and dig a bit deeper on issues of interest. You can always contact me with your feedback on agenda items!

Important projects, like the new Halfmoon Bay Community Hall, typically get their very own Let’s Talk Page where you can get a ton of information, as well as ask questions which will be posted along with answers from staff.

Want to get involved? You can volunteer to be on an Advisory Committee—keep your eyes peeled for annual calls for volunteers in the Coast Reporter and on the SCRD website.
